Every time I hear it, I’m reminded that music can express grief, compassion, and hope without speaking a single word. That experience inspired this reflection—and my own original composition, Tears in a Bottle.

Tears in a Bottle (Original Composition): The Bereans Music

Why does music have such power? One fascinating explanation is that music may imitate the human voice. When people are joyful, their voices are usually brighter, higher in pitch, and full of energy. But when they’re grieving, their voices often become softer, slower, and lower in pitch. Many of the melodies we associate with sadness share those same qualities. Perhaps that’s why they feel so deeply human. They echo emotions we’ve heard—and experienced—all our lives.

As both a physician and a lifelong musician, I find that fascinating. Science may help explain how music affects us, but it still leaves a deeper question. Perhaps that’s because some truths are simply too deep for words alone. Why did God create us so that sound could touch the heart at all?

The Bible doesn’t give us a scientific explanation, but it does show us that music was one of God’s gifts for the human soul. When King Saul was deeply troubled, David played his harp, and the music brought him relief.

Whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David took the lyre and played. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better.
1 Samuel 16:23 (ESV)

The next time a melody moves you—whether it’s a hymn, a film score, or a simple tune that brings back a cherished memory—don’t dismiss it as mere emotion. Instead, thank the One who created both the music…and the heart that responds to it.
