Over the past few days, I’ve watched several videos of people being reunited with animals they hadn’t seen in years. An elephant wrapped its trunk around the man who had once cared for it. A gorilla rushed into the arms of a former caretaker. A fox recognized the voice of the person who had rescued it. There were sheep, water buffalo, horses, even tigers.

What surprised me wasn’t just one remarkable story. It was the consistency. Different species. Different parts of the world. Yet the affection looked unmistakably genuine. As I watched, one question kept coming back to me: Do animals have souls?

It’s a question Christians have asked for centuries, and one the Bible answers with both clarity and humility. The Bible never portrays animals as mere biological machines. From the opening chapter of Genesis, they are described as living creatures. In fact, the Hebrew word nephesh—often translated “living being” or “living creature”—is used for both animals and humans.

And God said, ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures…
Genesis 1:20 (ESV)

Later, after creating Adam, Scripture says,

Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)

That doesn’t mean humans and animals are identical. Far from it. Only human beings are created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27). Only we are morally accountable for sin. Only we are offered redemption through Jesus Christ. The Bible clearly distinguishes humanity from every other living creature. Yet it also reminds us that animals are part of God’s good creation. They are capable of forming bonds, caring for their young, recognizing familiar faces, and displaying remarkable loyalty. Anyone who has owned a beloved pet already knows this.

Modern research has simply documented what many people have observed for generations. Elephants mourn their dead. Dolphins support injured companions. Dogs wait faithfully for owners who never return. Great apes remember people years after their last meeting. These behaviors naturally lead us to wonder whether there is something deeper within them.

Scripture acknowledges the question but resists giving more information than God has revealed.

Solomon writes,

Who knows whether the spirit of man goes upward and the spirit of the beast goes down into the earth?
Ecclesiastes 3:21 (ESV)

Notice what he doesn’t say. He doesn’t tell us that animals have an eternal destiny identical to ours. Nor does he tell us they do not. Instead, he leaves us with humility. There are mysteries God has chosen not to explain. Even so, the Bible offers glimpses of a future in which animals are present.

Isaiah describes a coming kingdom where wolves dwell with lambs, leopards lie beside young goats, lions eat straw like oxen, and a little child leads them (Isaiah 11:6–9). Revelation depicts horses accompanying Christ in His victorious return (Revelation 19:11–14).

Exactly what these passages mean has been discussed by faithful Christians for centuries. But perhaps we’ve been asking the wrong question. Instead of asking whether animals have souls like ours, perhaps we should first ask what animals reveal about the God who made them.

The psalmist answers beautifully:

O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.
Psalm 104:24 (ESV)

That verse shifts our attention from speculation to worship. The remarkable affection of an elephant. The loyalty of a dog. The gentleness of a horse. The intelligence of a dolphin. The embrace of a gorilla. Each one reflects the astonishing wisdom of its Creator.

Perhaps that’s why these reunion videos move us so deeply. They remind us that love, faithfulness, trust, and companionship are not merely human inventions. They are qualities woven into creation by the God who delights in all that He has made.

The Bible doesn’t answer every question we might ask about animals. But it tells us something even greater. Every creature points beyond itself. Every act of beauty, loyalty, and affection whispers of the One who imagined it before the foundation of the world.

The next time you watch an elephant recognize an old friend or a rescued fox run joyfully into familiar arms, don’t be too quick to solve every mystery. Instead, let that moment do what creation has always been meant to do. Let it fill you with wonder at the wisdom of its Creator.
