White Coat Ceremony (Colossians 3:23-24)

The auditorium was packed as all eyes were focused on the stage. The dean of the dental school proudly announced the name of each student. As each one was called, a white coat was placed over his or her shoulders, symbolizing the transition from the classroom to the clinic. It was the White Coat Ceremony.

My daughter was participating in this ceremony. At her dental school, the White Coat Ceremony is held just before the beginning of the third year. Traditionally, this marks the time when dental students leave the classroom behind and begin caring for patients full-time in the clinics.

The White Coat Ceremony began at the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago in 1989. Since then, more than one hundred American medical schools have adopted the tradition. It has also expanded to include dental, pharmacy, optometry, nursing, and other healthcare professional schools.

As I watched my daughter receive her white coat, I couldn’t help but think about what it truly represents. It is more than a garment. It symbolizes responsibility, compassion, humility, and the privilege of caring for another human being at a vulnerable moment in life. The white coat is a visible reminder that knowledge must always be accompanied by character.

As Christians, we have also been entrusted with a calling. While most of us will never wear a white coat, each of us has been given opportunities to serve others through the work God has placed before us. Whether we are physicians, dentists, teachers, parents, mechanics, students, or retirees, our vocation becomes an act of worship when it is offered to Him.

The Apostle Paul reminds us:

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Colossians 3:23–24 (ESV)

Ultimately, the greatest honor is not wearing a white coat or earning a professional title. It is faithfully serving Christ wherever He has called us. The uniform may differ, but the calling remains the same: to love God, love others, and glorify Him through our work.

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
