Critics (Luke 11:53-54)

“A critic is a person who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.”

I remember reading this quote over thirty years ago, and it rings more true today. Social media has allowed anyone to become a critic and remain anonymous. Twisting words, innuendos, cancel culture. The descriptions may change over time but the intentions are the same. Hurt and shame the targeted individual or group. 

As Jesus was leaving, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees became hostile and tried to provoke him with many questions. They wanted to trap him into saying something they could use against him.

Even before printed media, critics abounded. Our Lord, Jesus Christ, was no exception to their attacks. He was subject to the most severe criticism and questioning of any leader. Despite their attempts, Jesus never succumbed to their vitriol but answered their charges by challenging them and using them to teach His critics and followers to remain focused on His mission. A memorable example is the following encounter with the Pharisees.

Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with such scum?” When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.” Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.’ For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

Critics. 

They will always be with us. When we are the focus of their attacks, let’s remember the example of our Lord Jesus Christ. Focus on the mission and allow God’s Holy Spirit to guide your answers.
