“Gentlemen.”
Our teacher motioned toward the door leading to his classroom where a young woman was standing. She was a visiting teacher from another country, here to observe American high schools. In my high school, our teacher strictly enforced the rule that all boys would stand at attention when a woman entered the classroom. In today’s gender-fluid society, there are a few who would still stand at attention when a woman enters a room. It is unfortunate. There are many instances when standing at attention is appropriate and proper; it is showing respect to an individual or institution. Soldiers stand at attention in the presence of a superior officer. When the national anthem is played, there is an expectation to stand at attention for the duration. However, there is one institution where I believe it should be done more often. Recently, I was pleased to experience it.
“For those who are able, let’s stand and read the Word of God.”
The majority of the church congregation rose in unison as the pastor opened his Bible and read the passage on which his sermon was based. It was something that is not done in many contemporary churches and I appreciated it. It demonstrated respect for God’s Word, respect that should always be at the forefront of everyone’s mind and heart when they meet to worship God. Thousands of years ago, it was common for God’s people to stand when His Word was read aloud.
Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed the LORD the great God. And all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands; then they bowed low and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

Standing at attention honors the institution or individual. If we do it for a guest or for our country, we should certainly do it for Almighty God, the creator of the universe and the author of our salvation.
