Sending It Back (Matthew 6:7-8)

The three servers hovered around our table, elegantly placing the plates of food before us. Two other servers stood behind them, supervising the placement. The head server appeared and described the dish to us, creating high expectations. I took my first bite and smiled at my wife. “Oh my, THAT is delicious!” She nodded in approval. I glanced across the table just in time to see my friend recoil as he took his first bite. Without hesitating, one of the servers swooped in and whispered, “Is this not to your liking, sir?” My friend’s face said it all as he shook his head. “We will take care of this.” Within minutes, another dish arrived, completely different and not on the menu. My friend was satisfied with his new dish.

We were traveling with another couple, dining at a renowned restaurant. At other restaurants, if we encounter a dish that is not prepared the way we like, the usual protocol is to call a server over and point out the problem. If this does not resolve the issue, the next step would be to speak to the manager. If we do not take these steps, it is likely our concerns will be overlooked or ignored. The immediate response of the serving staff at this restaurant was impressive. How could it possibly get any better? Only with God!

And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

Matthew 6:7-8 (NASB)

Unlike a server in a restaurant, God is not studying our every move and attempting to figure out if we are content with our lives. It is not for His sake, but for ours, that we confide in Him. When we make the effort to pray to God, we humble ourselves before Him and acknowledge our limitations. We become aware how utterly helpless we are without Him and how we need to approach Him with reverence and respect. When we wish to speak to God, even before we pray to Him, He already knows our concerns we have and the requests we have for Him.

This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

1 John 5:14-15 (NASB)

Amen!

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
