He was a party animal. The life of the party. He loved drinking, having a good time, and being the center of attention. He would often make fun of Christians, saying we were no fun. We had too many rules and didn’t know how to enjoy life.
I always found that amusing. Did he really think Christians didn’t know how to have a good time? Perhaps he imagined Heaven as a place where we would sit on clouds, play harps, and sing hymns all day. Frankly, that doesn’t sound particularly exciting to me either! But what does the Bible say about celebrating?
Interestingly, Jesus performed His first recorded miracle at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11). When the hosts ran out of wine, He turned water into wine. In fact, it was better than the wine served earlier! Of course, this doesn’t mean Jesus was encouraging drunkenness or excessive partying. Scripture clearly warns against drunkenness (Ephesians 5:18). John’s Gospel tells us that Jesus performed this miracle to reveal His glory, leading His disciples to believe in Him. Still, I find it interesting that His first miracle took place at a celebration.
Jesus also compared the Kingdom of God to a great banquet (Luke 14:15–24). And when the prodigal son returned home, his father celebrated with a feast (Luke 15:23). Perhaps we have the wrong impression of what awaits us in Heaven.
The Apostle John writes:
Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.
Revelation 19:9 (ESV)
The marriage supper of the Lamb! God describes this wonderful event as a wedding celebration, with Jesus Christ as the Bridegroom and His people as the bride. We’ve all attended wonderful weddings. The food, music, laughter, and fellowship make for memorable occasions. But eventually, the celebration ends and everyone goes home. The joy of being with Christ will never end. Revelation 21:4 tells us there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. And Psalm 16:11 reminds us that in God’s presence there is fullness of joy.
I don’t know exactly what our celebrations in God’s Kingdom will look like. The Bible doesn’t give us all those details. But I know that being with Jesus Christ will be more wonderful than anything we can experience here on earth.
I wonder what my party-loving friend would think about that. He was always looking forward to the next party. I’m looking forward to the marriage supper of the Lamb. And the best part? We’re all invited.
