151 to None (Hebrews 12:1)

In 151 attempts, no team in the N.B.A. has recovered from an initial 0-3 deficit to win a 7 game series. If a team is faced with these statistics and nearly the entire media is trumpeting this, it will be a discouraging and daunting task to overcome. If I was about to undertake another task with similar dismal statistics, it would definitely sap my enthusiasm. In fact, if I was able to choose another assignment, I would do everything in my power to change it. I don’t want to be another notch in a depressing statistic. Would it make a difference if I had others passionately cheering me on? God gives us His glorious answer!

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.

Hebrews 12:1 (NLT)

For many years, I listened to the world and gave in to its expectations. If the odds were overwhelmingly against me, I usually gave up. In our walk with God, He encourages us, not with dreary numbers and statistics touting failure, but by the examples of the great faith of saints who have come before us. We read about the heroes of the Bible like Abraham, Ruth, David, and Paul. We remember heroes who helped us in our faith-pastors, teachers, and missionaries. When I take the time to remember this huge crowd of witnesses to a life of faith that continually surrounds and encourages me, how can I be discouraged? If God is for us, who can be against us?

When does one ignore the odds and statistics?  When we do God’s work for His Kingdom. He promises victory, either in this life or the next.

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
