Doing It For Their God (John 10:11)

“After I had an opportunity to reflect upon what happened, I realized the emperor was not a god, he was just a man like myself. I was upset with him and how he led so many to a senseless death.”

He did it for his country. He did it for his emperor. He did it for his god. Many years ago, I was invited to listen to the testimony of a former Kamikaze pilot of the Japanese Navy whose bullet-riddled plane crashed into the ocean. He survived to tell his story to others. It took his near-death experience to realize the truth about his faith in his emperor. He spent the rest of his life debunking what he and millions of his fellow Japanese had been indoctrinated with since birth: their emperor was a god, a divine being. To die for him was to die for one’s country. It was a selfish lie.

I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.

John 10:11 (NASB)

What a contrast to Jesus Christ. He is the only true God who loves us and willingly lays down His life for us. Even when we did not know Him and those who did, scorned Him during His life, He still died for us so that our relationship with God, which our sins had ruptured, could be restored. It should not take a near death experience to lead us to this realization.

The only thing Jesus asks of us is to believe in Him. He is the Good Shepherd. He is the Resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. This is no lie. It is the eternal Truth.

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
