Most of us have probably seen or played the game called a trust fall. One person stands with his or her back to another person, usually with their arms folded or held close to the body. Then, without looking backward, that person allows himself to fall. The person behind is supposed to catch him. The whole game depends upon trust. You are allowing yourself to fall because you believe the person behind you will be there and will not let you hit the ground.
In many ways, life is filled with trust falls. We all have things that we trust will “catch us” when life becomes difficult. If we face a difficult situation at work, we may trust our experience to help us solve the problem. If we encounter a difficult subject in school, we may remind ourselves that we have handled difficult subjects before and that we will get through this one too. If we face financial uncertainty, we may trust our savings. When life becomes difficult emotionally, we often turn to our family and friends.
Our trust falls may be our education, reputation, careers, money, families, relationships, experience, or even our own abilities. And there is nothing wrong with any of these things. They can all be blessings from God. But none of them can guarantee that they will always catch us. Money can disappear. Jobs can end. Relationships can change. Our health can fail. Our own abilities may not be enough for the problem in front of us.
So what happens when the thing we trusted to catch us fails? Who catches us then? We often say that we trust God. But do we really? Do we trust God’s promises enough to fall into His arms? Or when life becomes difficult, do we first reach for our money, our education, our experience, our friends, or some other solution? And what happens when those things are not enough?
Once again, God gives us the answer.
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
Hebrews 13:5–6 (ESV)
God says something here that no one else can promise: “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
He does not promise that we will never have problems. He does not promise that we will never lose something important to us. He does not promise that we will never fall. But He promises that He will never leave us. Our money cannot promise that. Our careers cannot promise that. Our education cannot promise that. Even the people who love us cannot promise that. Only God can.
But that relationship begins with Jesus Christ. We need to come to Him, accept Him as our Lord and Savior, and place our trust in Him. Then our ultimate security is no longer in what we own, what we know, what we have accomplished, or who stands beside us. It is in Christ.
There will be times in life when we fall. There may even be times when the things we thought would catch us are no longer there. But God will still be there. Maybe the real question is not whether we will ever experience a trust fall in life.
We will.
The question is: Who are we trusting to catch us when we do?
Don’t substitute the temporary things of this world for the One who has promised never to leave you or forsake you. Trust Jesus Christ. When everything else fails, He will still be there to catch you, stand you upright, and help you face what comes next through His love and power.
Amen!
Love and trust the Lord; seek His will in your life.

We all trust something to catch us when life gets hard—our experience, money, relationships, education, or our own abilities.
But what happens when those things fail?
Jesus Christ is the only One who can truly say, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
What are you trusting to catch you?
