As a physician, I always assumed that when the heart stopped, the brain quickly became silent. Cardiac arrest marked the end of life. Then I came across research that challenged that assumption. Scientists studying both animals and humans have found that the brain may remain electrically active for a brief period after the heart stops. In some studies, researchers observed bursts of highly organized gamma waves—brain activity often associated with attention, memory, and complex processing. It’s a remarkable discovery.
Not surprisingly, it has led to headlines claiming that science has explained near-death experiences or even proven life after death. But that’s not what the research shows. Scientists have demonstrated that the brain can remain active for a short time after cardiac arrest. They have not shown what a person is experiencing, whether consciousness continues, or what happens after death. Those questions remain beyond the reach of medical science.
As fascinating as these discoveries are, they leave us with an even greater question. What happens after we die? No EEG can answer that. No brain scan can answer that. No laboratory experiment can answer that. Only God can.
The Bible speaks with certainty where science reaches its limits:
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.
Hebrews 9:27 (ESV)
Science can teach us a great deal about the human body. As a physician, I find those discoveries both fascinating and worthwhile. But science was never designed to answer every question. It can tell us something about how we die. It cannot tell us what comes next.
That is why our greatest need is not a better understanding of the dying brain, but a right relationship with the One who conquered death. Jesus Christ didn’t merely talk about eternal life. He died, rose again, and offers the forgiveness of sins and everlasting life to everyone who places their trust in Him.
One day, every heartbeat will cease. The question that matters most is not whether our brain remains active for a few more moments. The question is whether we are ready to meet our Creator.
Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
