What If Everything Around You Changed? (Hebrews 13:8)

When I first stepped inside Hagia Sophia, I wasn’t thinking about architecture. I was thinking about time. For nearly fifteen centuries, people have stood beneath its massive dome. Emperors once worshiped here. Generations later, sultans entered the same building. Today, travelers from every corner of the world quietly look upward, marveling at the same breathtaking space.

Outside, the Blue Mosque continues to welcome worshipers. Beneath the city, the Basilica Cistern has silently supported Istanbul for centuries. Along the Bosphorus, ferries carry passengers between Europe and Asia just as boats have crossed these waters for generations. The Grand Bazaar and Spice Market remain filled with voices, colors, and aromas that connect today’s visitors with a much older world.

Everywhere I turned, Istanbul reminded me that history never stands still. Empires rise. Empires fall. Buildings change. Cultures change. Generations come and go. Even places that seem permanent continue to evolve. Standing in the middle of so much history, I found myself thinking less about what had changed and more about what hadn’t.

The writer of Hebrews reminds us:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)

That single sentence carries remarkable comfort. My circumstances change. My health changes. My career changes. Technology changes. The world changes. But Christ does not.

Perhaps that’s why we often feel unsettled when we place our confidence in things that cannot last. Careers eventually end. Nations change. Even the greatest monuments tell stories of transformation. Only Christ remains constant.

I left Istanbul deeply grateful for its remarkable history and beauty. Yet the greatest lesson I brought home wasn’t found in a famous building or ancient marketplace. It was the quiet reminder that while everything around me continues to change, the One I trust never does.

That may be the most enduring landmark of all.

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
