The Ultimate Aphrodisiac (Proverbs 19:22)

The late American statesman, Henry Kissinger, was renowned for his diplomatic successes. He negotiated the end of the Vietnam War, a truce between Arab-Israeli forces, and led the way to open China to the West. He garnered numerous honors and awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize. His prowess in the diplomatic arena was nearly equaled in the social setting. He was linked to numerous beauties and actresses including Candice Bergen, Jill St. John, Marlo Thomas, and Dianne Sawyer. His relationships earned him titles of “Washington’s Greatest Swinger” and the “Playboy of the Western Wing.” In response to the press and gossip columnists of the day, Kissinger glibly stated, “Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac.”

Aphrodisiacs have been around as long as relationships. Not surprisingly, the Bible records several examples. Mandrakes give off a sweet fragrance and were highly sought after as an aphrodisiacm, in the ancient world, as this passage from the Song of Solomon beautifully illustrates.

There the mandrakes give off their fragrance, and the finest fruits are at our door, new delights as well as old, which I have saved for you, my lover.

Song of Songs 7:13 (NLT)

However, there is something that is a more potent attractant than mandrakes or power. Once again, the Bible gives us the answer.

Loyalty makes a person attractive…

Proverbs 19:22 (NLT)

Our Lord, Jesus Christ, is the perfect Man. People were attracted to Him. He has power. He has charisma. Jesus is also God. The promises He made to His disciples and followers when He lived on Earth will always remain. His loyalty to all who place their faith and trust in Him will never be broken.

For the mountains may move and the hills disappear, but even then my faithful love for you will remain. My covenant of blessing will never be broken,” says the LORD, who has mercy on you. Isaiah 54:10 (NLT)

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
