Stumbling In The Dark (Proverbs 4:19)

“Marco!”

“Polo!”

The familiar names rang out over the cacophony of splashes of water and shrieks of the children. Nearly everyone has played this swimming pool game when one player either closes their eyes or blindfolds themself and then attempts to find the other players by yelling, “Marco” The other players are expected to answer with, “Polo” revealing their position. The blinded player must find them by sound alone. It is entertaining for sure, but I always played with people who cheated by either opening their eyes or moving their blindfolds. However, there is a variant of the game that is almost foolproof to cheating. What if one were to play this game in total darkness? This is a different experience and nearly impossible to cheat. Instead, all of the players would be stumbling over objects, furniture, and even each other. In fact, at times, it may be frightening since one could never be sure what they are stumbling over. 

But the way of the wicked is like total darkness. They have no idea what they are stumbling over.

What is true in a game is also true in the game of life. However, unlike a game, we have chosen to spend most of our existence in the darkness of sin, often in complete ignorance. What is even more tragic is believing that some of the things we stumble over may be beneficial for us. Drugs. Financial fraud. Destructive relationships. What hope is there for us?

Thanks be to God that we do not have to live our lives in the ways of the wicked. By confessing and repenting of our sins and accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, our path is illuminated by the Light of the world.
