With Great Freedom…(Luke 12:48)

The gallant superhero had just prevented a potentially catastrophic nuclear explosion. As he received the adulation of a grateful world, numerous reporters clamored for a statement. Embarrassed by the attention, he glibly stated, “With great power comes great responsibility.” He acquired his superpowers through a freak accident. He was not born with it nor did he earn it, however, he claimed it, accepted the responsibility, and used it to help others.

What is true in the movies is true in life. From being a parent to participating in the workforce, there are many roles and positions that we assume may bring with it great power. How will we choose to act? If we are given unlimited freedom, how would we use this privilege? Like power, with great freedom also comes great responsibility. God created us in His image. This means we are creatures imbued with a moral nature. We also are creatures with freedom of choice. We can choose to receive the grace and mercy that God offers us or we can choose to sin and disobey Him.

…When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.

Luke 12:48 (NLT)

God blesses all of us with many different gifts so that we will use them to serve Him and His kingdom. There is no other reason. Unfortunately, at times we may use these gifts to advance our own interests. God gives us the freedom to do this, but this is our choice, not His. The greatest gift we have received from God is salvation and eternal life through faith and belief in His Son, Jesus Christ. If we have received this from God, there is no greater gift we can ever receive. We are not born with it nor did we earn it. All we can do is accept it with gratitude and use it to bring glory to God.

In God’s Kingdom, much has been given to us and much more will be required. Will we accept the responsibility to serve God and His Creation?

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
