Crisis Faith (Jeremiah 2:31-32)

Faith is foundational to the life of a believer in Jesus Christ. There are many descriptions of faith. There is a daily faith, which we exhibit every day, in the expectation that God will meet our daily needs. There is an indwelling faith, living in the presence of God at all times. There is a saving faith that results when one confesses and believes that Jesus Christ is God and that He was raised from the dead. All of these types of faith are deep and lasting. However, there is one type of faith that is unlike these others.

Crisis faith.

The great Bible teacher, Warren Wiersbe, wrote, “Crisis faith is rarely deep or lasting. Once people see the hope of deliverance and their pain eases up, they forget the Lord and return to their old ways until the next crisis.”

“O my people, listen to the words of the LORD! Have I been like a desert to Israel? Have I been to them a land of darkness? Why then do my people say, ‘At last we are free from God!

We don’t need him anymore!’ Does a young woman forget her jewelry, or a bride her wedding dress? Yet for years on end my people have forgotten me.”

Jeremiah 2:31-32 (NLT)

We think we are able to solve our problems by our own efforts. Yet, no matter how many times we fail, we desperately cling to the failed idea that we can. We are fallen creatures, hopelessly lost in our sins because we are consumed with our pride. The Israelites never learned this lesson, in spite of thousands of years of trying to do it on their own. Each time they failed, they came running back to God, hopeful He would save them from their sin of rebellion and disobedience. Incredibly, the Israelites also forgot about God’s promises. God asked the rhetorical question, “Does a woman forget her jewelry or a bride her wedding dress?” Yet, Israel had forgotten God except when they were afflicted. They were a tragic example of crisis faith.

God included many examples of crisis faith in the Bible to instruct us. Our faith in God needs to be based upon more than life circumstances, turning to Him when we are in trouble or despair. Our faith must be based on the firm conviction that what God has promised, He will deliver, regardless of whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. God is always in control.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)

Love and trust in the Lord; seek His will in your life.
