Unless one collects vinyl records, this term may not resonate with this generation of music lovers, listening to their favorite tunes on their digital players. A vinyl record has two sides, cleverly named the A and B side. Although there are several formats that depend upon the speed of the playback, the 45 rpm was the most popular with one song on each side. The A-side was the song that usually received the most play time on the radio stations. The B-side was also known as the flip side and was a recording placed there by the record label to fill up the necessary recording space. While some record producers and artists dismissed it as a throwaway, a minority used it to introduce different versions of the A-side or even the same song recorded by different artists. Occasionally, the unexpected occurred, and disc jockeys would prefer the recording on the B-side to the A-side and flip the record, making the B-side more popular. Recognizing this possibility, some artists even recorded double A-sided records, releasing both sides as a single. The Beatles released 26 double A-sided records, including such familiar and hugely successful recordings like “We Can Work It Out” and “Day Tripper” as well as “Hey Jude” and “Revolution”. For some artists, the derided B-side of their records was actually their biggest success!
…therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: ‘Whoever believes will not be in haste.’ “
Isaiah 28:16 (ESV)
The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.
Psalms 118:22 (ESV)
Who is this cornerstone of which the Prophet Isaiah spoke and the Psalmist wrote? Hundreds of years later, Jesus Christ quoted these passages and referred to Himself as the Cornerstone.
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
Matthew 21:42 (ESV)
And the Holy Spirit emphasized this once again through the Apostle Peter’s preaching.
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Acts 4:11-12 (ESV)
Thanks be to God for His grace and mercy to give the world His Son, Jesus Christ. He was rejected and scorned by the very ones He came to save. He was the stone that was rejected. Yet, God highly esteemed Him and raised Him from the dead that whoever will believe in Him will not perish but have eternal life. The rejected stone became the Cornerstone, the foundation of faith in God.
The rejected and derided is now esteemed.
Love and trust the Lord; seek His will in your life.
